ABSTRACT

The main purpose of this study was to assess the impact of media on grassroot mobilization and participation in community development in Egor local government area of Edo State. Four research questions were raised to guide the study. 

The study adopted the descriptive survey research design. The population of this study comprises of two hundred and nine thousand, seven hundred and fifteen (209,715) Adults and Youths in fourteen (14) communities in Egor Local Government Area Local Government Area of Edo State while two hundred (200) participants were selected from four communities in Egor local government area using a multi-stage sampling technique.

Findings from the study among others revealed that the major media for mobilizing community members are radio, television, town crier and posters. Also, the people’s perceptions of the use of media for grassroot mobilization is very poor and that the extent to which the mass media has been effectively used to reach the rural populace is marginal. In view of the findings of the study, it was recommended among others that efforts should be made by community leaders to sustain the high level of the community members’ participation in community activities, community leaders should introduce modern media for mobilizing community people so as to improve participation and that messages or information communicated to the communities should be tailored to suite their level of understanding in order to improve the effectiveness of the media used.
