ABSTRACT
Lack of motivation among academic and non-academic staff has resulted in high staff turnover and low staff retention at the Nigerian universities. Hence this study was set out with the objective to investigate the impact of leadership style on employee motivation and retention at the University of Lagos, Nigeria. Employing a non-probability sampling technique and a quantitative research method to collect data through structured questionnaires, the study found that the predominant leadership style at the University of Lagos was transactional, followed by transformational. The findings showed that there is a significant positive relationship between leadership style and employee motivation and retention. This study which recommends that university administrators should adopt transformational leadership style in order to enhance employee motivation and retention, and also increase the quality of academic graduates produced has implication to filling the gap in literature on the impact of leadership style on employee motivation and retention in the university system, particularly in the Nigerian context.
