IMPACT OF INFORMATION RESOURCES ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF NURSING UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS IN THE UNIVERSITY OF BENIN, BENIN CITY

ABSTRACT

      This study was designed to analyze the impact of information resources on the academic performance of nursing undergraduate students in the University of Benin, Benin City, Nigeria. The study was guided by 4 purpose of study with 4 corresponding research questions. The simple random sampling technique was used to survey 30% of the total population which gave one hundred and sixty-five (165) nursing undergraduate students of the University of Benin, Benin city, Nigeria. Data was collected with the use of questionnaire titled “Impact of Information Resources on the Academic Performance of Nursing Undergraduate Students in the University of Benin Questionnaire (IIRAPNUSUBQ) and analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency tables and percentage. 165 questionnaires were administered, 157 were retrieved and found to be usable, resulting to 95.2% response rate, used for the analysis.

      The result revealed that information resources such as electronic databases, textbooks, internet, journals, projects, dictionaries, internet facilities, encyclopedia, newspapers and government publications are the information resources that are utilized by nursing undergraduate students. The research also revealed that nursing undergraduate students make use of electronic database, newspaper, journals, projects, encyclopedia and internet facilities to a high extent. The result of the research also found that information resources have a great impact on the academic performance of nursing undergraduate students in the University of Benin, Benin city, as they are uses for their class assignments, class tests, effective performance in examination, seminars and workshops.

   The study also revealed that erratic power supply, the attitude of library staff, inadequate access to the internet, inadequate access to up-to-date information amongst others are the factors affecting nursing students use of information resources. The research also contributed to the body of knowledge as it has been able to establish that information resources have numerous impacts on the academic performance of nursing undergraduate students as they ensure effective performance during their class test, class assignment, examinations, seminars and conference. It has been able to establish that electronic databases, Textbooks. Internet facilities, Journals, Projects, Dictionaries, Encyclopedia, Newspapers and Government publications are the types of information resources that are mostly utilized by nursing students. It has also been able to ascertain that nursing students make use of electronic databases, Newspapers, Journals, Projects, Encyclopedia and Internet facilities available in the library to a very high extent.
