ABSTRACT

It is undeniable that a significant factor contributing to the resurgence of Biafran agitation, particularly the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), is the issue of marginalization after fifty-four years since the war ended, the Igbo people of Eastern Nigeria have not been fully integrated back into Nigerian society. The Igbo people contend that certain ethnic groups have intentionally hindered their ability to attain the highest positions in the country, relegating them to a status likened to “third-class” citizens within their own nation. They argue that they have been marginalized in various aspects such as state and local government representation, equitable distribution of federal appointments, and access to prestigious roles within the government. The Igbo populace perceives a lack of acknowledgment and acceptance from the ruling Nigerian government, prompting their desire to secede from Nigeria.  the Indigenous People of Biafra’s agitation has had a lasting impact on South Eastern Nigeria over the past two decades. While it has brought attention to important issues facing the Igbo people and galvanized support for self-determination This is a contributory factor to the numerous agitations by the indigenous people of Biafra (IPOB) must especially in the south Eastern part of Nigeria, leading to several impact on both the Economic, political and security activities in the South East.

Economically, the actions of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) have been observed to have a significant economic impact on the southeastern region of Nigeria. The group’s continuous push for secession and its associated activities have been recognized as causing disruptions across various sectors of the local economy, including trade, investments, and overall economic stability. These disruptions are a result of factors such as increased political tensions, interruptions in commercial operations due to protests or strikes, and potential hesitance from investors due to uncertainties surrounding the region’s political future. Politically, the call for self-determination by the Indigenous people of Biafra in the southeastern region of Nigeria has ignited a surge in political participation and activism among the Igbo communities in that area who perceive themselves as being sidelined within the Nigerian political framework. Consequently, there has been a notable increase in political consciousness and engagement, influencing conversations regarding self-rule and independence. The activities of the Indigenous people of Biafra in the south eastern region of Nigeria have resulted in significant security implications. Their actions have caused a range of security issues in the South East, making it a focal point for various security challenges.
