ABSTRACT

This study was designed to examine the impact of guidance and counselling on the career choice of students in selected secondary schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. Four (4) research questions were raised to guide the study. The descriptive survey research design was used in carrying out the study and the population comprises of 2,520 students in 17 public Senior Secondary Schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. Sample of one hundred students (100) was selected for the study. The instrument used for this study was a structured questionnaire, which was designed by the researcher and validated by the researcher’s supervisor and two other experts in the department of Educational Evaluation and Counselling Psychology, Faculty of Education University of Benin. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as, frequency count, percentages, mean and standard deviation. Findings of the study based on the questions raised indicated that guidance and counselling services help students to explore their interests, strengths, and values to align with suitable career paths, guidance and counselling session provide students with information about different industries, job roles, and career trends to make informed decisions, It was shown that guidance counsellors assist students in understanding the various career options available to them and the requirements for each. The study also revealed that there are no good office spaces to accommodate counsellors in their school, as well as inadequate guidance and counselling facilities in their school. It revealed that there are no adequate outreach and promotion efforts to keep students aware of the benefits of guidance and counselling services. Funding was also indicated as one of the challenges for effective employment of counsellors in secondary school. In view of the challenge seen, it was recommended that Government should make adequate provision for funding guidance and counselling services and facilities in public schools, school authority should involve adequate outreach and promotion efforts to keep students aware of the benefits of guidance and counselling so that students can seek counselling services when needed.
