ABSTRACT
The study was to investigate the impact of generator fumes in close environment on human health in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. Four (4) research questions were raised and literature of other researchers were reviewed.
The study adopted the descriptive survey research design, data was collected through the aid of a questionnaire. The questionnaire was structured according to the research questions and distributed to sample population of 200 respondents.
The findings of the study revealed that that generator fumes emission represents one of the largest sources of primary air pollutants in urban (residential and industrial/business) areas. Large amount of generator exhaust emissions have adverse effects on the health of human and that of the environment. The health hazards associated with generator fumes include chronic exposure to generator fumes which causes dermatitis, prolonged exposure to generator fumes which causes prostate cancer and chromosomal aberrations are some health hazards associated with prolonged exposure to generator fumes. Also, there are several environmental hazards associated with generator fumes such as depletion of the ozone layer shielding us from ultraviolent rays of the sun, it can lead to the acid rain which is harmful to the environment. It was however recommended that the government should ensure that the fossil fuel allowed to be used in the country are only those with high octane number which combust easily; and that government should ensure that adequate awareness is given to members of the public on the dangers of using generators close to the residential or office buildings.
