ABSTRACT

This study investigates the impact of financial stress on the academic performance of students in the University of Benin. Financial stress is a prevalent issue among university students, affecting their ability to focus on academic pursuits and meet educational requirements.

Using a mixed-methods approach, data was collected through surveys and interviews with undergraduate students to explore their experiences of financial stress and its effects on academic performance. Quantitative analysis revealed a significant correlation between financial stress levels and academic performance, with higher levels of financial stress associated with lower grades and increased academic difficulties.

Qualitative findings provided insights into the specific sources of financial stress, including tuition fees, living expenses, and inadequate financial support. Additionally, students reported employing various coping strategies, such as part-time employment, budgeting, and seeking financial assistance, to mitigate the impact of financial stress on their academic performance. These findings underscore the importance of addressing financial stress among university students and implementing targeted interventions to support their academic success and overall well-being.
