ABSTRACT

The study investigated the impact of environmental education on student’s knowledge and attitude towards the concept of circular economy among university of Benin students.

To guide this study, four research questions were raised and answered. The study adopted descriptive research study, 185 students were selected from 1853 population of  three departments, Health, Safety and Environmental education (HSE), Environmental Management and Toxicology(EMT) and Animal and Environmental Biology(AEB) were the population of the study. The instrument used was a structured questionnaire designed by the researcher. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive analysis such as simple percentage, mean and standard deviation. The study revealed that to a higher extent, environmental education is a major criterion in making people, especially students aware of environmental problems, particularly their knowledge and attitude towards circular economy and its benefits and therefore should be introduced into school curriculum of higher institutions. Thus, Universities should include circular economy education in their courses, using real-life examples and hands-on learning. This will help students understand sustainability better and give them the skills to apply circular economy ideas in their careers, leading to long-term environmental and economic benefits.the study also revealed that exposure to circular economy education improves students’ understanding of sustainability, helping them make better choices, reduce waste, use resources efficiently, and adopt long-term sustainable habits. Therefore, Schools should make environmental education practical with hands-on activities and real-world projects, helping students develop sustainable habits in waste reduction, recycling, and resource conservation.
