IMPACT OF EGGROLL AND CARBONATED DRINKS CONSUMPTION ON TRIIODOTHYRONINE (T3)

ABSTRACT

The consumption of egg rolls and carbonated drinks has raised concerns regarding its potential impact on thyroid function, specifically T3 (triiodothyronine) and TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) levels. . Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the impact of eggroll and carbonated drinks consumption on thyroid gland hormones (T3 and TSH) of university of Benin students, as well as to explore existing research on this topic to shed light on the relationship between dietary choices and thyroid health. The study was carried out using a total of fifty (50) apparently healthy adults aged 18-30 years. It was a longitudinal study divided into two stages. They were the pre-consumption phase (control phase) and the post-consumption phase (test phase) among each participant. The test phase involved eating eggroll and coke while the control phase involved fasting of participants. A total of 5mls of blood sample was collected twice for both test and controls samples for thyroid hormone analysis . Free T3 levels were determined using immunoenzymometric Assay while Free TSH levels were determined by Competitive Chemiluminiscence Immunoassay (CLIA)(TYPE 5). Data obtained from this research was presented and analyzed using statistical package for Social Sciences(SPSS) version 21.0(IBM Inc. USA). The Results showed Normal levels of TSH and T3 with no statistically significant differences in T3 and TSH after Consumption of eggroll and Coke (1.508±0.69, 3.436±1.45) when compared to before consumption (1.871±0.99, 2.849±1.22) (p>0.05). While the existing but limited body of research suggests a link between egg rolls, carbonated drinks, and altered T3 and TSH levels, it is important to note that more extensive, controlled clinical studies are needed to establish causation and elucidate the precise mechanisms involved. Moreover, individual variations in metabolism, genetics, and overall dietary patterns must be considered when assessing the impact on thyroid function.
