IMPACT OF ECONOMIC RECESSION ON THE EDUCATION SECTOR IN OREDO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

This study examined the impact of the recent economic recession on the education sector in Nigeria. Five research questions were raised by the researcher which provided data on the impact the 2016 economic recession in Nigeria had on the rate of students drop-out in senior secondary school; on parents/guardians’ provision of basic learning materials for their children/wards in senior secondary school; on government’s provision of educational facilities in senior secondary schools; on government provision of the appropriate staff strength in senior secondary schools; and on government support for staff development in senior secondary schools. Using the proportionate stratified sampling technique, a total of 174 public/government secondary school teachers (including Principals) were drawn out of the fourteen (14) secondary school in Oredo Local Government Area. Questionnaire which was validated by experts with a reliability co-efficient of 0.94 using Cronbach Alpha, was used to collect data from the teachers and principals. Data collected were organized into frequency table for easy analysis using T-test of proportion. The findings of the study revealed that the 2016 economic recession affected the rate of students drop out of senior secondary schools; affected parents or guardian’s provision of basic learning materials for their children/wards; affected government’s provision of educational facilities in senior secondary school. The study recommends that Nigeria’s government at all levels should develop economic and educational strategies to prevent the re-occurrence economic recession because of its negative impacts on the education sector, provide adequate protection for the education sector to mitigate its catastrophic impacts such as shortage of teachers, moratorium on training/conferences, etc., put basic and very key educational infrastructures in place to ameliorate the adverse effects the crisis had on parents, teachers, students.
