ABSTRACT
Women in pre-colonial Okpe held a complementary position to the men. Women held important roles in agriculture and trade. They were expected to work and earn income. Power was based on seniority and not gender. Women retained curtained economic opportunities within the social system1. The system expected women to be significant wage earners in the family. Women had the right to work and to profit from their work although the money usually served as a contribution to family income. The money earned by the woman could be kept by the women. She did not have to depend on her husband for income. Okpe women in the pre-colonial period held large position in politics. There were women chiefs and their opinions were highly respected by the men and the society at large2. The beginning of colonial rule brought to Africa, the European notion that women belonged in the home nurturing their family.
