ABSTRACT

This study established the impacts of clipping on Igbo names by analyzing several Igbo names, the motivation behind clipping in Igbo language, the various processes involved in clipping and also some special considerations. This study was successfully established by reviewing some previous works by other linguists. The data collection was based primarily on a direct oral interview of five (5) Igbo competent native speakers. The secondary data was gotten from textbooks, journal articles and online materials. The theoretical framework chosen for this study is the Item and Arrangement and Item and Processes framework propounded by Charles Hockett an American Structural linguist.

Personal names in Igbo are always meaningful as it is common amongst most African languages. This work argues that Igbo personal names undergo a morphological process called Clipping. According to Modupe (1972), a name is said to be clipped when a shorter form of the name is derived through reduction or deletion of one or more syllables from a polysyllabic name. According to Yuka (2008), the clipped form of the personal names is generally understood to share an identical form of semantic paradigmatic relation with the full version. This present sees clipping not only as a form of lexical derivation through deletion, but also as a way of truncating some vital aspects of names. In Igbo land, it is common to find personal names that have been clipped, such clipping is founded on either phonological conditioning, fashions, modernization, attitude to names at any level or an indication of emotional attachment with the name bearer.
