IMPACT OF CLASS SIZE ON STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN PUBLIC SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS

ABSTRACT

This study looked into how much class size affected the academic achievement of pupils in public senior secondary schools in Edo State's Oredo Local Government Area. Four research topics were posed and investigated in order to fulfill the study's objectives. 150 respondents, selected from the 15 public senior high schools in the Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State, comprised the study's sample size. The tool used to gather data was the questionnaire. For this study, a descriptive survey research design was chosen. The standard deviation and mean were used to analyze the data. A number of factors, including a lack of government funding, a shortage of teachers, an increase in student enrollment, and the methods taught by teachers, have been found to have an impact on class size in public senior secondary schools in Edo State's Oredo Local Government Area. It was determined that, in public senior secondary schools in Edo State's Oredo Local Government Area, class size significantly affects pupils' academic performance. The research made several recommendations, including that in order to address the issue of the high student-teacher ratio, the federal and state governments focus more on hiring more teachers and constructing more classrooms.
