SUMMARY

The missionaries (Christianity) who came to the Ikwo community in the 18th century with their new religion from different parts of Europe and America contributed significantly to the growth and development of the Ikwo community. As we have noted above, they bequeathed not only education and medical services but also other important aspects of development that touched the social, economic, political and moral life of Ikwo people. Western education has contributed so much to the social development of the Ikwo community both in terms of human development and physical transformation. The spread and function of Christianity as a religion is very much noticeable. Though Christianity has brought a lot of benefits to the Ikwo people, it has also contributed to some ills directly and indirectly. While it is without doubt a major factor in the regulation of human life and unity, it has also caused conflicts and divisions. Members of one denomination often look at those from different denominations with disdain and suspicion. A case is even reported of protestant pastor who together with his members refused just to pass through the front of an Anglican church. Also Christianity has overthrown much of the traditional practice of the Ikwo people. This has been described earlier as Extreme Europeanization. The English language introduced into the land through the missions is now used in clan meetings and even in the practice of divination at times.
