ABSTRACT

The Benin people who are one of the major ethnic groups in Nigeria, have a rich history and culture. Christianity has had a significant impact on the Beninculture,who were traditional religionist and worshippers of various gods and goddesses. The arrival of Christian missionaries in the late 19th century marked the beginning of the transformation in the religious and cultural landscape of the Benin culture.The study therefore explores the effects of Christianity on the Benin culture including changes in religious practices, social structure, and cultural norms. It also examines the role of Christian missionaries in the spread of Christianity among the Benin culture and the challenges faced in the process. The study draws information from sources such as scholarly articles and historical documents which will provide insight into the complex and multifaceted impact of Christianity on the Benin people and their culture.The study found out that the spread of Christianity among the Benin culture has not been without controversy.Some traditionalist have opposed the spread of Christianity, arguing that it is a threat to their culture and traditions.There have also been tensions between Christians and traditionalists in Edo state, particularly in the areas of religious practices on the impact of Christianity on the Benin culture has been significant, and continues to shape the way of life, and beliefs and values of the people. Christian and tradition should act and live in harmony. Greater study should be undertaken by modern scholars on Benin culture.
