ABSTRACT

This study investigated the impacts of child labour on student’s academic performance in Oshimili South Local Government Area of Delta State.

The survey research design was adoptedfor the study. A sample of 300 consisting of 150 teachers and 150 parents in Oshimili South Local Government Area of Delta State was used or the study. The questionnaire titled “the impact of child labour on the academic performance of secondary school students in Oshimili South Local Government Area of Delta State instrument was used for collection of data. While Mean rating, standard deviation, T-test and linear regression was used for the analysis of research data.

The findings showed that, the forces that produce child labour are many, complex and interrelated. Among others, the causes of child labour are poverty rate, illiteracy, having many children and parental social status. Also, the findings revealed that child labour affects the cognitive, emotional and social development of the secondary school students in Oshimili South Local Government Area of Delta state. Furthermore, parent’s occupation was a significant predictor of the causes of child labour which contributed about 1.4%. It was therefore recommended among others that, parents should be sensitive on how they involve their children inlabour and the government should put necessary machinery in place to curb child labour.
