IMPACT OF ADULT EDUCATION AND THE HEALTH TRANSFORMATION WOMEN IN OVIA NORTH EAST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

This study investigates the impact of adult education and the health transformation women in Ovia North East local government area of Edo State. Four (4) research questions were raised to guide the study.

A total of One Hundred and Fifty (150) adults learners selected from the Six (6) adult education centres in Oredo local government area where used for the study. This was selected through purposive sampling techniques.The major instrument used for this study was the questionnaire. The questionnaire was designed and validated by experts in the department of Adult and Non-formal Education, Faculty of Education University of Benin. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistical techniques such as tables, frequencies counts, and simple percentages

Findings of the study revealedthat the type of adult education programmes relevant for promoting of healthy living and reduction of child mortality among rural women are; adult basic literacy  education, adult health education, extension education, environmental education, women education and community education.It was further revealedthat participation in adult education programme enhances rural women healthful living practices by helping them to practice family planning, take appropriate measure to avoid contacting the disease, help them to keep their surrounding clean and them to attend anti-natal clinic when pregnant. It was therefore recommended that adult education programme should be inculcated into women’s education curriculum as presently stipulated in the National Policy on Education in Nigeria. It was further recommended that dult education programme should be extended to other states in Nigeria to ensure that majority of rural women in Nigeria were exposed to the programme
