ABSTRACT

This study delves into the multifaceted impact of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strikes on Nigerian university students. Four research questions were raised to guide the study. The research investigates the consequences of these strikes on academic performance, curriculum implementation, learning habits, and the quality of graduates in Nigerian universities. Nigeria's education system encompasses three main sectors: basic education (nine years), post-basic/senior education (three years), and tertiary education (four to six years, depending on the program of study). University education is highly regarded globally as a fountain of intellectual development and a crucial source of leaders for the future. Despite its significance, frequent strikes by ASUU have disrupted academic activities, resulting in extended study periods, hampered academic pursuits, and a disjointed academic calendar. The population of the study consisted of all the undergraduate final year student of Faculty of Education, Faculty of Management Sciences, Faculty of Law, University of Benin. The total population of final year students in the Faculty of Education, Faculty of Law, and Faculty of Management Sciences in the University of Benin is 2,798; Faculty of Education: 998 students, Faculty of Law: 700 students, Faculty of Management Sciences: 1,090 students. These numbers are based on the 2022/2023 academic session. (Source: academic planning, University of Benin, 2023) To address these challenges, the study recommends alternative learning resources, flexible assessment policies, curriculum adaptations, improved student support services, advocacy for timely dispute resolution, skill enhancement programs, and long-term solutions to prevent frequent strikes. These recommendations are intended to improve the overall educational experience for Nigerian university students and create a more stable and conducive learning environment. This study sheds light on the significant and often detrimental effects of ASUU strikes on the Nigerian university education system. It underscores the need for proactive measures and collaboration among stakeholders to mitigate the adverse consequences and ensure the uninterrupted pursuit of knowledge and academic excellence.
