ABSTRACT
This study investigates the impact of a conducive and sustainable theatre environment on the management of the Uniben Theatre, located within the University of Benin, Nigeria. Recognizing the crucial role of university theatres in fostering artistic expression, cultural preservation, and academic development, this research aims to identify the key factors that contribute to the successful management of such institutions, particularly in the context of developing countries. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the study combines quantitative data from surveys of theatre stakeholders with qualitative data from interviews, observations, and document analysis. The findings reveal a strong correlation between a conducive theatre environment, characterized by adequate resources, effective leadership, and a collaborative atmosphere, and positive management outcomes, such as staff satisfaction, student engagement, and audience attendance. The study also highlights the importance of community engagement in ensuring the sustainability of university theatres. By actively participating in the cultural life of the community and fostering relationships with diverse stakeholders, theatres can enhance their artistic impact, expand their educational reach, and secure vital resources. However, the research also identifies significant challenges facing the Uniben Theatre, including inadequate funding, outdated infrastructure, and limited community engagement. These challenges hinder the theatre's ability to fully realize its potential and contribute to the cultural and educational development of the community. Based on these findings, the study offers recommendations for improving the management of the Uniben Theatre, including investments in infrastructure, increased funding, enhanced management practices, and strengthened community engagement. These recommendations have broader implications for other university theatres in Nigeria and beyond, providing valuable insights into how to create a more conducive and sustainable environment for theatre production and education.
