ABSTRACT

This project is a syntactic and semantic analysis Igbo idioms. The focus of the previous studies on Igbo idioms had concentrated on the semantic features alone.

The objectives of the study is to provide a vivid analysis of Igbo idioms, provide a better understanding of Igbo idioms, contribute our own quota to existing studies in analysis and Igbo studies.

This study will be based on the data collected from two sources; the first is the primary source which will involve the collection of idioms from the Igbo language informant, such as experienced Igbo elders and advanced Igbo scholars and the second source will be to resort to online and Igbo standard textbooks dealing with literature, which will serve as the secondary source of data collection.

The theoretical framework used in the work is descriptive linguistics. The findings in this study is that idioms can be grouped into six syntactic types, which is as follows: Noun + Noun idioms; Noun + Adjective Idioms; the Infinitive + Noun complement; Infinitive + Noun prepositional phrase; the Infinitive + Noun + Noun idioms and Noun + Infinitival phrase idioms and also into semantic groups.
