ABSTRACT

This project work examined the graphology, syntactic and lexicosemantic stylistics features of language used to portray the concept of ideology and identity in Tes Osonye Onwueme's Shakara: Dance Hall Queen. It analyzed the effect of language use as it concerns tha quest of self-realization, freedom and individualistic perception towards the question of "who am I." The question of Identity is one that most teenagers of our contemporary society thrive to explore, considering the rapid change from the phase of childhood to adulthood, their concerns and desires for change is at an increase and as such, can lead them to social vices. To exemplify these issues, an analysis of the linguistic features of the text is done to mirror out these same issues in our contemporary society. Tess Onwueme stylistically used language to depict issues of ideology in regards to identity, socio-economic and socio-religious ideologies by exemplifying the speech act of performance of complaining, predicting, ordering, sentencing, arresting etc., that also enhances the linguistic interpretation of the text.
