SUMMARY
Box culvert is a very useful structure in the construction of roads and highways. It can sometimes replace bridges if the water to be carried is not much and if the width of the canal is not very large.
The dimensions of box culvert were obtained from the hydraulic design, which gave us our Discharge (Q) = 1.95 and Velocity (V) = 0.297 m/s, after the hydraulic design was carried out, The box culvert was then designed as a two cells culvert with a total length of 27 m and total width of 3.15 m. The span for each cell is 1.2 m measured from face of the supports. The invert of the box culvert is 0.2m downward from the bottom of the main drain (MD-A). Conveyance condition case 4 gave the minimum head losses as required. Then the minimum area of steel was found to be 477 for the top and bottom slabs and provided as:
Provide @ 200mm c/c : for the top and bottom slabs
Provide @ 200mm c/c : for the walls
Provide @ 250mm c/c : for temperature and shrinkage
