ABSTRACT

The work examines the humanitarian initiatives and the role of the Red Cross, namely during the Nigerian Civil War, a calamitous event in the nation's history. The Nigerian Civil War (1967–1970) is one of the most catastrophic wars in African history, attributable not only to its political and military ramifications but also to its significant humanitarian crises. Numerous people, especially in Biafra, endured famine, illness, relocation, and significant fatalities. Amidst this devastation, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) significantly contributed by supplying food, medical provisions, and clothing to impacted civilians, setting up clinics, hospitals, and medical facilities for war victims, examining the conditions of prisoners of war (POWs), and delivering relief services. The Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS) made substantial contributions to relief operations, collaborating with international partners to alleviate the suffering inflicted by the conflict.
