ABSTRACT
The importance of fundamental human rights in a civilized state cannot be overstated. These rights, provided by the law of a jurisdiction, are crucial for preserving the well-being and dignity of its people. However, despite being clearly stipulated in law, their protection, preservation, and observance are often not fully guaranteed. In Nigeria, there are gaps in the provisions for fundamental human rights, stemming from both domestic legislation and international human rights instruments. The practicability of these rights remains a significant challenge, recognized by the United Nations as a global impediment. This work aims to take a deep dive into the history, scope, and nature of fundamental human rights in Nigeria, identifying obstacles and proposing practical solutions. Additionally, it will explore all fundamental human rights outlined in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and also examine the limitations, violations and challenges faced with human rights in Nigeria.
