ABSTRACT

The issue of migration is as old as mankind itself and has become an overwhelming trend across the globe. Odun Balogun and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie engage the theme of migration in their literary works. Both authors are interested in factors that necessitate migration and how it shapes the identity of migrant characters. Through a qualitative analysis, this study aims to illustrate the hopes, frustrations and impact of migrant characters in Balogun’s Adjusted Lives and Adichie’s The Thing Around Your Neck. The study argues that factors such as poverty, insecurity, persecution and government’s policy drive migration. The methological and theoretical underpinning of this study are international migrational theories and social criticism, namely post-colonial theory of migration that facilitates the readers’ understanding of the reasons and complexities of the migration issue and its impacts on the characters’ identities.
