ABSTRACT
This research work examines the history of the Niger Delta Region from 2000 to 2022. The Niger Delta Region, an oil-rich and culturally diverse area in southern Nigeria, experienced significant events between 2000 and 2022. The period saw the escalation of militant groups, such as the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), demanding greater control over resources and environmental justice. The Nigerian government responded with a mix of military force and amnesty programs, leading to a fragile peace. Meanwhile, oil spills and pollution continued to devastate local communities and the environment. Political and economic reforms aimed at addressing the region's grievances were slow to materialize, perpetuating poverty and inequality. Despite some progress, the region remains a flashpoint for conflict and instability, with ongoing struggles for resource control, environmental justice, and sustainable development."
