ABSTRACT 

This study aimed to investigate the factors associated with the mass failure of students in history in senior secondary schools in Etsako West Local Government area of Edo state Nigeria. To achieve this purpose, the following research questions were put forward: What are the common reasons for mass failure in History among senior secondary school students in Etsako West Local Government, are there any specific demographic or socio-economic factors associated with the mass failure in history, does unavailability of instructional materials for teaching of history subject affects students’ mass failure in History subjects, how would the interest of students towards the nature of history subject contribute deeply to their mass failure in SSCE. Four (4) research questions guided this study. The population of this study was 7,122 in the 12 schools of Etsako West local government area of Edo state and comprised a sample of 142 respondents which were used for the study and selected through random sampling technique. The study adopted a survey research design for the study and the major instrument used for data collection was questionnaire. The questionnaire was validated and the reliability was determined through the test-retest method. The findings of the study revealed that several factors were associated with the failure of history students and solutions were discovered to help the students in their grades increase.
