ABSTRACT

Macrobrachium vollenhoveni is a freshwater prawn species, found mainly in West African. This research was conducted to study histologically the ovarian and spermatogenic development of M. vollenhoveni fromOvia River, Benin City. Specimens were collected in two seasons (rainy and dry), for two years, (January 2005- December 2006) Specimen were identified and sexed, thereafter slides were prepared by staining with hematoxylin and eosin. Five stages of gonadal development were observed, these stages were immature, early maturing, late maturing, mature and spent. The breeding period of M. vollenhoveni was from August to October, each year. Developing cells were classified into oogonia, primary oocytes, early vitellogenic oocytes and late vitellogenic oocytes or secondary oocytes, while in male cells were classified into Spermatogonia, primary spermatocytes, secondary spermatocyte, spermatid and spermatozoa. Classification was based on different cellular characteristics observed. spawning period of M. vollenhoveni was during the rainy season,(August-October) showing that rainfall play an important role in this process.
