ABSTRACT

This study examined the relationship between high performance work systems and employee creativity among selected small-scale business in Benin City. The objective of the study was to investigate whether financial incentives, performance appraisal, training and development and mentoring have significant relationship with employee creativity in small-scale businesses. The study reviewed relevant works of several authors. The study used the survey method by administering copies of structured questionnaires to one hundred and twenty (120) employees in small-scale business enterprises in Benin City. The data for the study were analyzed using both descriptive statistics such as simple percentages, mean and standard deviation while inferential statistics (linear regression) was used with the help of Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 22 on the completed questionnaires to assess the relative strength of response to each of the items on the questionnaire. The study revealed that financial incentives and training and development had significant relationship with employee creativity while performance appraisal and mentoring had no significant relationship with employee creativity. The study recommended that managers should adopt adequate financial rewards and incentives to reinforce employees to be creative in carrying out their job functions and also carry out regular training and development programs to develop the capacity of their employees.
