ABSTRACT
Picralima nitida is a plant from Africa, people there have been using it for its good effects on health. Researches have shown that Picralima spp has different bioactive substances like akuammidine and flavonoids. This explicit study was carried out to evaluate the effect of the extract of p.nitida on hematological parameters in experimental rats. Healthy Adult male wistar rats were grouped into six groups of five animals each and were administered five doses; 200mg, 500mg, 1000mg, 2000mg and 3000mg/kg respectively using a gavage. Administration was done orally daily for 35 days and the rats were sacrificed. Blood was then collected and various hematological parameters were evaluated. The results revealed elevated values of WBC and lymphocytes while RBC, Hb, PCV and MCHC were significantly decreased at higher doses indicating the emergence of anaemia in the experimental rats. At higher doses the effect of administering the freeze dried unripe aqueous extract of picralima nitida is not beneficial and could lead to deleterious consequences.
