ABSTRACT

The hematological effects of the root bark of Picralima nitida in rats were evaluated to establish its hematopoietic potential. To achieve this, albino rats (n = 24), weighing 99 – 160g were grouped into 4. Groups 2, 3 and 4 were orally administered 50mg/kg, 100mg/kg and 200 mg/kg of P. nitida root bark extract respectively for 28 days. Group 1 served as the control, receiving water only. 5.0mL blood sample was collected from each rat on day 29 into sample bottles. The result showed that P. nitida root bark extract produced a significant (P<0.05) increase in MID cells, mean corpuscular volume (MCV) and mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) when compared with the control. Non-significant increase was observed in white blood cell (WBC) count, red blood cell (RBC) count and hemoglobin (HGB). The heavy metal analysis of the powdered sample showed that Lead, Nickel and Cadmium were below detection limit. Zinc, Copper, Chromium, Manganese and Iron were identified in low concentrations. Calcium, Sodium, Potassium and Magnesium were present but also in minimal quantities.
