ABSTRACT

This project provides research into the Oluku landfill in Benin City, Nigeria, West Africa and focuses on the possible heavy mineral risks to the groundwater in the exact location. The Oluku landfill is an unrestricted nor regulated waste disposal area. The unregulated and unrestrictive waste management in the area has made room for indiscriminate waste disposal. The accumulation of a wide range of waste products which include but are not limited to plastic waste, chemical waste, home waste, industrial waste and agricultural waste has resulted in the build-up of heavy metals in the area and poses potential health risks to the inhabitants of the area through groundwater contamination by leaching process.
