ABSTRACT
The aim of the present study was to investigate the haematoitic properties of methanol extract of Justicia carnea leaves in streptozotocin (STZ) -induced diabetes in Wistar rats. A total of thirty-six rats were randomly divided into six groups of 6 rats each. Diabetes mellitus was induced in the rats with intraperitoneal injection of 50 mg/kg body weight of STZ. Fasting blood sugar (FBS), body weight, acute toxicity and haematology measurements were carried out. Acute toxicity study showed that at the highest dose of 5000 mg/kg bwt, methanol extract of J. carnea did not produce any mortality in the rats. Varied doses of methanol extract of J. carnea leaves significantly reduced the blood glucose concentration of streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats (p < 0.05). The greatest weight increase was observed in group 6 when compared to the other groups (p < 0.05). Streptozotocin significantly affected the haematological indices of the rats, while the extract produced an ameliorating effect (p < 0.05). This study has shown that methanol extract of J. carnea leaves can substantially reverse the effect of streptozotocin-induced diabetes on rat haematology.
