ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to assess the health-related quality of life among vasectomized males in Nigeria. Five research questions were raised while four hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. The descriptive survey research design was used to examine the health-related quality of life after vasectomy. The population of the study consisted of all the 107 persons who have undergone vasectomy. A sample size of a total of 87 respondents were assessed for the study from the 18 teaching hospitals out of the 23 teaching hospitals where vasectomy procedure is practised in Nigeria (Federal Ministry of Health, 2021). The instrument for data collection was a self-structured questionnaire. The validity of the instrument was ensured by three experts comprising the researcher’s thesis supervisors and another expert from the Department of Health Safety and Environmental Education (HSE). Reliability of the instrument was ensured using the test re-test method while Pearson Product Moment Correlation was used to determine the Co-efficient value which was 0.74. This was considered adequate for the instrument. Data collected were analyzed using frequency counts and percentages to answer the research questions raised while chi-square was used to test the formulated hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. Findings revealed that majority of the vasectomized males reported high health-related quality of life, (73.3%). It was also observed that age significantly influenced their health-related quality of life (P = .046) while income (P = .215), educational level (P = .128) and parity (P = .252), did not significantly influence quality of life. Consequently, it was concluded that there was High Health-related quality of life among vasectomized males. It was recommended among others that: the Ministry of Health at the Federal, State and Local Government levels should promote public awareness campaign on the high Health-related quality of life following vasectomy in order to create more awareness on Health-related quality of life that vasectomy is related to poor health quality of life.
