ABSTRACT

This study examined the impact of health, poverty reduction on economic growth in Nigeria for the period of 1981-2019. The main objective of this research work is to examine the impact of health and poverty reduction on economic growth in Nigeria. The study used Error Correction Mechanism (ECM) to examine the relationship between dependent and independent variables of the study. The study found that health expenditure has a positive and significant impact on economic growth while inflation was also found to have a negative and significant impact on economic growth and finally, poverty level in Nigeria was found to have a positive and significant impact on economic growth in Nigeria. The study recommends that government should allocate healthcare expenditure in key dimensions that can stimulate economic growth while also improving the well-being of the population. It is also critical that policy makers implement appropriate policies at the macroeconomic level—targeted at public health expenditure and economic development. Overall, in light of the potential benefits of healthcare to the economy, universal access to healthcare is an area that warrants further research. Also, Government should start up programs that would Increase literacy rate and skill development. One of the major steps in reducing poverty in Nigeria is through education. Quality education can provide a lasting solution to poverty in Nigeria. Finally, the government must also legislate against bad governance, corruption and ineptitude of politicians and officials in order to break the cycle of poverty for individuals in Nigeria.
