ABSTRACT

The study evaluates the impact of health indices taking cognizance of other socio-economic factors that may influence health on economic growth in the Nigerian from 1990 to 2021. The objective of the study was to evaluate the impact of health indices on economic growth in Nigeria. Autoregressive Distributed Lag Model was employed to examine the relationship between Health indices and Nigeran economic growth. The study found that health indices has a positive and significant impact on economic growth in Nigeria. The results of the analysis revealed that not all the explanatory variables of the model were significant in explaining economic growth as proxied by GDP in the short run. However, in the long run, only Education and Government expenditure as proxy for health expenditure significantly impacted economic growth as proxied by GDP. In the short run, government expenditure was positive and significant, while life expectancy was negative but significant. In the long run, Federal government total expenditure was positive and significant, while education was negative but significant. Thus, the government should direct its focus on variables that are significant and also positive to promote economic growth in Nigeria.
