In civil engineering project, if the project is to be successful, it has to be safe, reliable, and sustainable in its operations. To embark on a civil project involves taking a reasonable amount of health and safety risks. This study was carried out to determine the health and safety risks associated with the use of heavy plant and equipment in Civil Engineering projects, the frequency of occurrence of this risks and the effect of the risks on workers’ productivity. A total of 115 questionnaires were administered to the respondents and 74% of them were completed, returned and found helpful. Data accumulated were analyzed using mean score index, percentages and charts. The most significant health and safety risk as well as the most frequently occurring risk is workers being struck by falling objects followed by toppling of plant due to working near dip or inclined surfaces. The factor affecting workers’ productivity the most is the availability of site clinic. Hence the above mentioned most significant risk should be given critical attention on site and no expense should be spared when making provision for site clinic for a civil project.
