ABSTRACT

This study explores haggling as a linguistic phenomenon within the Esan language in Ekpoma community. Haggling, a form of negotiation commonly observed in marketplaces, involves the use of language and communication strategies to bargain for goods and services. The study aims to investigate the linguistic features employed by Esan speakers in the Ekpoma community during haggling interactions.

The research employs a qualitative approach, utilizing ethnographic methods such as participant observation and audio recordings of haggling exchanges. The data collected are analyzed using sociolinguistic and discourse analysis frameworks to identify the linguistic strategies employed by Esan speakers in Ekpoma community during haggling. The findings reveal that haggling in the Ekpoma community involves a variety of linguistic features, including code-switching between Esan and Nigerian Pidgin English, as well as the use of specific lexical items, intonation patterns, and nonverbal cues

Furthermore, the study uncovers the role of cultural norms and social hierarchies in shaping haggling interactions. Participants strategically employ language and communication styles that align with cultural expectations and social roles, thereby reinforcing social bonds and negotiating positions.

The research contributes to the understanding of haggling as a linguistic phenomenon within the Esan community, shedding light on the intricate relationship between language, culture, and negotiation strategies. The findings have implications for linguistics, sociolinguistics, and intercultural communication, highlighting the importance of linguistic competence and cultural sensitivity in successful haggling interactions.
