ABSTRACT

Pyrenacantha staudtii Hutch and Dalz leaves are used in the preparation of traditional medicine to heal ailments such as malaria, wounds, worms, ulcers, inflammations and fever. In this study, the phytochemicals, minerals and effects of the methanol leaf extract of Pyrenacantha staudtii Hutch and Dalz on the white and red blood cells of rats was evaluated. The heamatological studies, heavy metal analysis and total flavonoid content of the methanol leave extract of Pyrenacantha staudtii Hutch and Dalz were carried out using the established methods. The haematological studies revealed that the rat’s white and red blood cells were not significantly affected by the methanol extract of Pyrenacantha staudtii Hutch and Dalz’s leaves, The result of the investigation shows that the extract contains iron (2.8 mg/kg), manganese (2.9 mg/kg), lead (0.02 mg/kg), chromium (0.26 mg/kg) and zinc (0.93 mg/kg). The studies shows that the total flavonoid content of the methanol leaf extract of Pyrenacantha staudtii Hutch and Dalz (Y=0.092X, R2=0.976), was 28.54 mg quercetin equivalent (QE) per gram of sample in dry weight (mg/g).. Pyrenacantha staudtii is a promising medicinal plant with a wide range of potential health benefits. The medicinal potentials of this plant supports the discovery of new drugs.
