ABSTRACT
There is a growing interest in exploring natural alternatives, such as phytogenic feed additives, to enhance poultry health, growth performance, and overall productivity. This project evaluated the effects of Justicia carnea leaf and ginger rhizome extracts on growth response and haematological indices of broiler chickens. The study aimed to evaluate the potential of these natural plant extracts as growth promoters, their optimum levels and impact on the haematological indices of broilers. A total of ninety-six birds were experimented on with four treatment groups (0ml - control, 2.5ml, 5.0ml and 7.5ml). The experiment lasted for eight (8) weeks from the day of arrival to the day of termination. The body weight and other growth performance parameters (feed intake, feed conversion ratio and weight gain) were taken. At the termination of the experiment, blood samples were collected from birds selected at random. The haematological parameters assessed included Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV), Mean Corpuscular Haemoglobin (MCH), and Mean Corpuscular Haemoglobin Concentration (MCHC). The data was subjected to statistical analysis using GENSTAT and means were separated using Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT). The 5 ml (T3) and 7.5 ml (T4) dosages of the extract significantly improved final body weight, weekly weight gain, and feed conversion ratio (FCR), indicating enhanced growth efficiency and nutrient utilization. Additionally, the 7.5 ml dosage (T4) showed the most notable improvement in haematological parameters, particularly Mean Corpuscular Haemoglobin Concentration (MCHC), suggesting enhanced oxygen-carrying capacity and overall health. These findings highlight the potential of Justicia carnea and ginger extract as natural growth promoters and health enhancers in broiler production.
