ABSTRACT

A study of the effects of water soluble fraction of diesel and fuel on the growth of marine algae Chlorella vulgaris was carried out in the laboratory for 14 days. The test microalgae was grown in seven culture vessels which were in triplicates. Different concentrations 0%, 1%, 5%, 10%, 15% 20% and 25% of water soluble Fraction of fuel and diesel used. The growth responses of the microalgae were measured using a spectrophotometer at wavelength 750m. Samples were analyzed at the start and end of the experiment for some physico-chemical parameters such as pH, COD, temperature, to show the alga phycoremediating potential. Descriptive statistics, inferential; one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), repeated measure paired t-test and Turkey test were done using Microsoft excel, 2010 and SPSS 20. The results also revealed that 25% and 20% treatment had the highest growth for Chlorella vulgaris in WSF diesel while for fuel, 15% and 20% treatment had the highest growth, the control treatment had the lowest yield for both diesel and fuel. There was a significant increase in temperature,TDS and conductivity.
