ABSTRACT

Groundnut skins and Groundnut reject are considered as waste product with little or no economic value and could be used as alternative feed resource rabbits Therefore, this study was performed to determine the growth performance and carcass characteristics of growing rabbits fed ozone-treated groundnut skin meal (GSM) as replacement for wheat offal and groundnut reject meal (GRM) as replacement for soyabean meal. The study was divided into two experiments. Four dietary treatments, were formulated to contain 18% Crude protein and 2700Kcal. Metabolisable Energy such that wheat offal and soyabean meal were replaced at 0%, 25%, 50% and 75% by GSM and GRM, respectively. Twenty four rabbits were used for each experiment. Result showed that growth performance of rabbits fed groundnut reject meal were not significantly (p>0.05) affected by the dietary treatments. However, the growth performance of rabbit fed groundnut skin meal was significantly different (p<0.05).Result showed that groundnut reject meal (GRM) inclusion did not significantly (p>0.05) affect the dressing percentage of rabbits but significantly (p<0.05) affected carcass weight of the rabbit. Dressing percentage was highest at the control. In addition, there was no significant (p>0.05) difference among the organs except the kidney. Result showed that Groundnut skin meal (GSM) inclusion significantly (p<0.05) affectedthe dressing percentage, the dressing percentage was improved, but there were no significant (p>0.05) difference among the organs except the stomach. Therefore, GRM can satisfactorily replace wheat offal up to 50 %, without posing any significant effect on the dressing percentage.
