ABSTRACT

Good quality semiconductor thin films of cadmium sulphide (CdS) were successfully deposited on glass slides at a temperature of 50°C and molar concentrations of 0.03M, 0.06M, 0.09M, 0.12M, 0.15M in deposition bath by improved growth method. Absorbance (A) spectra data were obtained by a T80+ UV/VIS double beam spectrophotometer at wavelength range 340 to 980nm. Other optical and solid state properties were calculated using the data and compared with other deposited thin films. Average optical and solid state properties of thin films include: absorbance ranging from 0.022 to 0.258, transmittance (T) ranging from 0.552 to 0.951, reflectance (R) ranging from 0.027 to 0.19, coefficient of absorption (α) ranging from 0.05 to 0.59 x106m-1, refractive index (n) ranging from 1.39 to 2.54, film thickness ranging from 0.02 to 0.14 x10-6µm and band gap ranging from 1.53 to 1.9 eV. Film with refractive index less than 1.9 could be used in antireflection coating, eye glass coating and solar thermal control coatings. Those with refractive index greater than 1.9 could be useful in construction of poultry production, anti-dazzling coatings and gain film solar cells.
