GREEN SYNTHESIS OF MANGANESE OXIDE NANOPARTICLES AND ITS APPLICATION ON THE REMEDIATION OF Pb CONTAMINATED SOIL

ABSTRACT

NPs have shown to be of valuable application in different fields such as agriculture, medicine, environment, engineering and so on, this is because of its unique small size that ranges from 1-100nm. It has a high surface area to volume ratio and has been distinctively utilized in the remediation of pollutants from the environment. This study aims at using an environmentally safe and sustainable approach towards the synthesis of MnO2 NP using plant extract of Ficus exasperata. The characterization of the NP was done with X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscope (SEM EDX), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Dynamic light scattering (DLS), and the result showed the successful synthesis of MnO2 NP with particle size of 60.35nm, it also gave FTIR peaks 976.6cm-1 , 1133.1cm-1 , 1636.3cm-1 , 1899.5cm-1 indicative of the formation of manganese oxide nanoparticle. From the result X-Ray diffraction (XRD) analysis it gave an amorphous compound, with crystal structure, phase composition and purity of the compound, the EDX gave elemental composition of atomic concentration of Manganese (Mn) 93.88%, calcium (Ca) 2.02%, magnesium (Mg) 1.26%, iron (Fe), potassium (K), silicon (Si), phosphorus (P) and chlorine (Cl) were all undetectable in the sample, with Mn being predominant this shows that Mn oxide was successfully synthesized. The remediation studies was also done using pot experiment.
