ABSTRACT

With the four published poetry collection and approximately fifty published works including plays, novels and short stories, the Nigerian writer, Akachi Adimora-Ezeigbo’s work have not been accorded the deserved limelight. This study therefore showcases her prowess especially in the creation of aesthetics by examining the graphological patterns in her selected poetry collections namely; Heart Songs and Waiting for Dawn. These patterns enable her to effectively project the thematic thrust of the collections.

This study employs the qualitative research methodology to identify, analyse and interpret the graphological features in Adimora-Ezeigbo’s poetry in the light of Linguistic Stylistics. This work adopts a textual analysis of the selected poems and a close reading strategy for a rigorous and detailed study. Also, some of the standpoints in this study are supported by views of theorists, critics and other scholars whose reviews serve as secondary sources.

This study finds that Akachi Adimora-Ezeigbo deploys the technique of spacing and stanza structuring, spelling and punctuation as a stylistic tool to puncture the thematic thrust in a deeper sense. She therefore put this into play by strategically firing the imagination of the reader thereby drawing the reader’s attention to the views being expressed and laying emphasis on certain words and phrases. These graphological patterns do not only appear as an aesthetic means, but as elements of foregrounding.
