ABSTRACT

This study was carried out on the sand facies of the Benin Formation exposed at Idumwowina Quarry. An integration of outcrop studies as well as laboratory analysis (petrographic and particle size analysis) were used in this study. Results of the petrographic studies revealed quartz as the dominant mineral ( which places the sandstone as quartz arenite. Statistical treatment of Particle Size analysis reveal wellsorted to poorly sorted, the mean of the sands are Very coarse-medium sand fine skewed to coarse skewed, platykurtic to Very leptokurtic. Binary plot of skewness versus Standard Deviation states that the sands are of the fluvial system of the Benin Formation. Ternary plots of QFL tells the Provenance & Tectonic setting These sands are derived from mixed provenances based on petrographic interpretation. The provenances include craton interiors, transitional continental blocks, which tells that the region and sands composed of sedimentary rocks. Mineralogy and texture maturity of the sands are immature to mature. Paleoclimatic condition of the Benin Formation is semi –humid to humid climate ,contains lots of Quartz and by Scotese ,et al., the provenance is tied to the Migmatite-gneiss complex.
