Abstract

This study, titled "Government Regulations and Performance of the Insurance Industry in Nigeria," investigates the impact of regulatory pronouncements on the performance of the Nigerian insurance industry from 2010 to 2022. The primary objective is to analyze how leverage (LEV), inflation (INF), firm size (FSIZE), and firm age (FAGE) influence the return on assets (ROA), which serves as a measure of the industry’s performance. The research employs a quantitative methodology, utilizing regression analysis to examine the relationships between the regulatory variables and profitability over two distinct periods: 2010-2016 and 2017-2022. The findings reveal several key insights. Throughout both periods, leverage consistently exhibited a negative impact on profitability, though this relationship was not statistically significant in either timeframe. Inflation had contrasting effects: significantly decreasing profitability during 2010-2016, but showing a positive yet statistically insignificant impact from 2017-2022. Firm size positively influenced profitability, becoming statistically significant in the later period, while firm age negatively impacted profitability, with significance only in the later period. These results highlight the dynamic nature of regulatory impacts on the insurance industry, underscoring the importance of firm characteristics and external economic conditions. Based on these findings, the study recommends that insurance firms in Nigeria adopt adaptive strategies to mitigate the adverse effects of leverage and inflation. Larger firms should leverage their size to enhance profitability, while older firms need to innovate and restructure to maintain competitiveness. Policymakers should consider these dynamics when formulating regulations to foster a more resilient and profitable insurance sector. Continuous monitoring and analysis of regulatory impacts are essential for sustaining long-term growth and stability in the industry.
