ABSTRACT

The study investigated the impact of governmental policy in entrepreneurship development in Warri south local government area of delta state. Specifically, the study aimed at assessing the impact of government policies as well as the role of governmental agencies in the development of entrepreneurship the Warri south local government area of Delta state, Nigeria, Also, the study sought to identify major factors discouraging entrepreneurial tendencies in the region. To achieve the study goal, four research question were raised, and two hypothesis was generated. The study population comprised of registered businesses within the warri south local government area of Delta State, from which a sample of 120 respondents were selected using the convenient sampling technique. The study adopted a survey research design which entailed the use of questionnaire as research instrument in sampling the opinion of respondents on the subject matter. A total of one hundred and twenty (120) questionnaires was administered via pick-anddrop method, to registered businesses within the region. Out of the questionnaire distributed, only a hundred and nine (109) responses were retrieved and used for analysis. Data obtained from the respondents were analyzed using statistical descriptive mean, simple percentage, and frequency count, while the multiple linear regression was utilized in testing the formulated hypotheses, via the Statistical package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version20. Findings obtained after due analysis revealed among other things that the policies of government towards the promotion of entrepreneurship in the region have been ineffective; and the agencies of government charged with the duty of entrepreneurial promotion have effectively served their purpose. More so, the study found that there are a number of factors that discourages people within the region from engaging in entrepreneurial activities among which limited access to fund and lack of incentives from government ranked highest. Based on the findings, the study recommended among other things that government should prioritize measures aimed at improving accessibility to funding for entrepreneurs, while also ensuring that its agencies are properly supervised; as this will help to ensure that that they discharge their duties as expected.
