ABSTRACT

This study examines the relationship between government healthcare expenditure and labour productivity in Nigeria. The healthcare sector plays a crucial role in promoting human capital development and enhancing productivity in a nation. However, limited research has explored the specific connection between government healthcare spending and labour productivity, particularly in the Nigerian context. To investigate this relationship, the study employs a quantitative research design and utilizes secondary data from various sources, including World Bank Development Indicators and Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Statistical Bulletin. The analysis covers the period of 1980 to 2020, considering the most recent available data. Key findings suggest that increased government healthcare expenditure positively affects labour productivity. Adequate funding for healthcare facilities, infrastructure, personnel, and medical supplies leads to improved health outcomes, reduced absenteeism, enhanced worker morale, and increased overall productivity. The study also highlights the importance of effective healthcare policy implementation and efficient allocation of resources to maximize the impact of healthcare expenditure on labour productivity. In conclusion, this study establishes a positive relationship between government healthcare expenditure and labour productivity in Nigeria. It highlights the importance of prioritizing healthcare investment to improve health outcomes, enhance worker productivity, and foster sustainable economic growth. Policymakers, healthcare administrators, and stakeholders can utilize these findings to inform evidence-based decision-making and formulate strategies aimed at optimizing government healthcare expenditure for the benefit of the Nigerian population.
