ABSTRACT

It is also worthy of note that once the groundwater quality of a terrain is contaminated, it become approximately impossible in making the underlying water more wholesome for domestic purposes by simply stopping the sources of contamination. Hence, it became very necessary to prevent the contamination of groundwater most importantly by periodic monitoring through various reliable methods of groundwater quality assessments. This report was thus geared toward providing a comprehensive groundwater quality assessment using Ogida community in Benin City as a case study; Majorly to ascertain the degree of wholesomeness of the groundwater for its consumers by making adequate comparison of the results obtained with known and widely accepted World Health Organization (W.H.O.) standard; also, to fill up the need for detailed groundwater quality reports that are in short supply in the study area. Ordinary kriging method was applied on some selected groundwater quality parameters after the WQI was determined by analytical method. The steps involved in the using of kriging interpolation method for the geospatial analysis included: Test of normality; Selection of attribute data and model interpolation method; Semi-variogram fitting and testing; Cross validation; Spatial Dependency determination and Creation of groundwater quality prediction maps. The WQI results obtained for each samples were all excellent ranging from 99.60-99.83% suggesting their suitability for drinking and other domestic purposes. The final prediction maps obtained from Kriging interpolation gave a graphic image of the distribution of selected water quality paramaters, namely; NO3, TDS, EC, Alkalinity and Calcium over the entire study area. By this results, the state of the groundwater in the study area is now made obvious filling up the information gap for investigative reserchers for the state of the ground water in Ogida community.
